What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the fact that your body is designed to heal itself. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways between the brain and all the organs of the body. If there is a problem with the spine, it can not only cause local pain and irritation, but also malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body.

Since the structure of anything determines how it functions, if the structure of the body isn't right it can't function properly. Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize winner for Brain Research, said “better than 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating to the physical body in its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism, and healing.” The treatment of “mechanical distortions” is the expertise of doctors of chiropractic. The spine is the most common location for “mechanical distortions,” but they can occur in any area of the body. That is why doctors of chiropractic are not only experts with the spine but all joints of the body.

What is an Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, “locked up,” or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones to gradually return to a more normal position and motion, thereby removing “mechanical distortions.” There are many ways to adjust the spine. Dr. Paul Gurney uses a variety of adjusting techniques based on individual need.

Do I need to see a chiropractor?

Since pain is one of the last things to show up when you have a problem, it is important to get a check-up even if you are not in pain. Many people go faithfully to the dentist when their teeth aren't hurting just to catch a cavity before it starts, yet they only have their spine checked when it hurts. Like a dental cavity, discovering a spinal problem in the beginning stages ensures a quicker and more complete recovery.
If you are unsure if chiropractic care would be appropriate for you, please know that a consultation is always no charge.
